1972-73 WHA. Game 5. Los Angeles at Winnipeg

1972-73 WHA. Game 5. Los Angeles 5 at Winnipeg 1. Winnipeg now leads the series 3-2.  The Sharks need this game to stay alive in the series and they do just that. The Sharks win in dominant fashion to force a game six back in Los Angeles. Scott Sutherland led the Sharks attack with two goals.  Jim Niekamp also had two points.

1972-73 WHA. GAme 5. Cleveland 7 at New England 8  (OVERTIME) . New England wins the best of seven series 4-1.   In a Wild and wacky game the New England Whalers blow a 6-4 lead only to see Cleveland take a 7-6 lead late in the third. But the Whalers tie the game late in the third period,  and then Brad Selwood puts in the OVERTIME game winner . The New England Whalers defeat the Cleveland Crusaders to win the best of five series 4-1.  They now await the winner of the Los Angeles-Winnipeg Series.

1972-73 Game 4. Winnipeg at Los Angeles Sharks. WHA .  Winnipeg now leads the best of seven series 3-1.  The Winnipeg Jets got off to a hot start but the LA Sharks just kept battling back. Jets were very good defensively in the third period holding off the Sharks until the Sharks pulled their goalie and Gary Veneruzzo beats Ernie Wakely to force Overtime. But in OT, it was again the powerful Jets and their terrific powerplay. Winnipeg scores a PPG when Christian Bordeleau takes a great pass from Norm Beaudoin to win this one and take a 3-1 series lead. The Jets were led by the Golden Jet Bobby Hull with two goals.

1972-73 WHA. New England at Cleveland. Game 4

1972-73 WHA. New England 4 at Cleveland 3. (OVERTIME) Game 4. Huge game in Cleveland as the Whalers try to take a stranglehold on the series. The Whalers get off to a great start taking a 2-0 lead only to see Cleveland come back and tie things at 3-3 after two periods. The third period produced nothing and it was on to overtime we go….. In OT, it was Tom Webster beating Gerry Cheevers and the New England Whalers take a 3-1 series lead with a huge 4-3 Overtime win.

1972-73 WHA. Game 3. Winnipeg Jets 2 at Los Angeles Sharks 3 (OVERTIME)  . Winnipeg now leads the series 2-1. The Los Angeles Sharks get back into the series with a huge win in LA. They were down 2-0 after the first period and it did not look good as Winnipeg was really controlling the play. But the Sharks scored twice in the second period and then Gary Veneruzzo scores the game winner to give the LA Sharks the win and gets them back into the series, now being down just two games to one.

1972-73 WHA Playoffs. Game 2. Los Angeles  1 at Winnipeg 3. Winnipeg now leads the series 2-0. The Winnipeg Jets get a goal from Trail, BC native Joe Zanussi, who is most famous for being a part of the Phil Esposito – Jean Ratelle- Brad Park deal , to break open a 1-1 tie and it stands as the game winner as the Jets win game two to take a 2-0 series lead over the Sharks of LA.

1972-73 WHA Playoffs. Game 2. Cleveland 3 at New England 4. New England takes a 2-0 series lead. The New England Whalers got off to a quick start and then rode that start to a big win over Cleveland to take a 2-0 series lead. Larry Pleau was hot in this game scoring twice early to give the Whalers the lead they would never relinquish. Brindley did make it close for Cleveland in the third period but that would be all they would put behind Bruce Landon on this night. Gerry Cheevers picks up the loss for Cleveland.

1972-73 WHA Playoffs. Game 1. Cleveland Crusaders at New England Whalers. This one was all New England as the Whalers rode their powerplay to a big lead and then hung on against a struggling Crusaders team that could not get anything going offensively. The Whalers scored three times on the powerplay to pick up the win. Brett Selby had two goals and an assist to lead the Whalers attack.  Tommy Webster had a goal and an assist.
